The Muslin
In dressmaking a muslin is made as a first step in the process of tailoring a garment to fit a specific individual. This is a crucial step in altering a pattern so it fits just right and drapes properly. It is a test garment made of inexpensive unbleached muslin — a wonderfully soft and unassuming fabric (thus the name). I’m all about the muslin. The attention to detail, not rushing the creative process, persisting until it is just so… It’s really about the fun of the creative process, and bringing an idea to life. I thrive when I’m brainstorming a new pattern — thinking through how I want all the various elements to come together. Always chasing the next idea in the making. The muslin.
The Garden
Ideas grow from the mind, much like a garden. Cultivating this fertile, creative space where emerging and blooming ideas flourish is so much fun! Just like a real garden, of course it takes hard work and time. But it’s also worth the effort to foster an appreciation for heirloom skills, re-purposing and the value of handmade items. It has become a place of beauty, whimsy and play. Won’t you join me in, The Garden.
The Muslin Garden
I was raised in a family of impeccable seamstresses, so it’s only a wonder that I acquired a love of sewing (and making just about anything by hand). It began with furniture and clothing for dolls, and branched into embroidery and quilting and then sewing for my children… you get the idea. Combine that with a degree in graphic design and a lifetime of creative thinking and well, the result is The Muslin Garden. At its heart it is really a collection of things I’d like to give as gifts. Some items are vintage finds. Some are up-cycled using a combination of machine, hand sewing, embroidery, quilting and appliqué. Some are one-of-a-kind handmade items, and some, well… just belong. Take your time and browse our unique selection of vintage, up-cycled and handmade delights. Most of all… Enjoy.
